An action plan identified at the “Special information and Strategic Planning Forum” on Ocean Restoration

Antananarivo 27 Oct 2022: Mme. Hawa Ahmed Youssouf, Representante Special du President de la Commission de l’Union Africaine based in Madagascar, hosted a meeting for African ambassadors, government Ministers, scientists, international banking and global aid agencies to discuss the objectives for ocean restoration of Africa’s Ocean Pastures and the plans to “act now”. Co-hosting with her were Dr. Roseline Rasolovoahangy, Founder – President of OPR-MG (Madagascar) and Ambassador for Africa to Global Island Innovation organization, and Mr. Russ George, Founder and CEO of OPR World Inc. (USA).

“Today we make clear our commitment to restore the ocean pastures of Madagascar and Africa through ocean pasture restoration which uses nature-based methods to replenish vital natural minerals in specific offshore locations. We expect this work to promptly restore these areas to historic levels of health and productivity” according to Mr. Russ George. “Healthy ocean pastures are vital to feeding ocean fish, seabirds, and other marine life. Improving fish populations will address one of the biggest problems facing all of Africa, food availability and food sustainability.”

At the same time, ocean restoration results in the immediate capture and sequestration of tens of millions of tonnes of fossil fuel age CO2. The Paris Climate treaty recognizes this ‘Blue Carbon’ as produced by ocean restoration is a large and valuable climate change ‘carbon credit’ nature-based commodity and can become an important new natural resource for African nations. We are already working on the first of many 3-Year OPR R&D deployments to show commercial viability in Africa. Beginning next year, our work seeks to prove OPR is Environmentally Safe, Ecologically Sustainable, and Economically Self-Sustaining.

“Many Africans lost their lives as fishermen as Africa’s oceans became depleted of fish. Bringing back the fish will return these lost fishermen to lives of providing nutritious food for their families, communities, and all of Africa.” Dr. Rasolovoahangy reminded the audience, “Half of the people of Madagascar have depended on the ocean for much of their nutritional needs. It is clear that action is needed now to restore their ocean. Simultaneously, OPR Madagascar’s Blue Carbon once created is expected to deliver important new revenue for the government and society.”
